The Golden Magic...

According to Wikipedia, comfort food is traditionally eaten food which often provides a nostalgic or sentimental feeling to the person eating it… And there is nothing that fits the definition as aptly as the classic pairing of a slice of toast and a huge dollop of Amul butter. It’s the eternal pair of Sehwag-Tendulkar or Jai-Veeru that can never ever go wrong.

Butter in itself will be comforting to many… There would be a huge army of Indians who just cannot have their Aloo Paratha without a sinful amount of butter or Pav Bhaji without huge spoonfuls of butter. But for me (and I am sure for many) toast-butter combination takes the cake. Mind you this is no ordinary butter. It’s only the classic golden hued, soft and salty Amul butter that can satisfy the craving and nothing else. There is no specific time or season for me having toast butter. I am always game for it as against many people who may like it only for breakfast. My idea of a perfect afternoon, in fact, would be a crazy movie on TV (like Andaz Apna Apna) and a perfect pair of toast butter in my plate before me.

The process of making this ambrosia is sacred and rituals are to be carefully followed. The preparation starts hours before as the butter needs to be moist and supple because all of us know the horror of cold, refrigerated slab of butter. Only one slice of bread goes in the toaster for two since the second should not get cold by the time you put butter on it. After the bread has been inside for a precise amount of time and for precise number of seconds out comes the slightly brown, slightly gold and smelling delicious piece of toast. Then you take a generous helping of butter by cutting your knife through oh-its-so-soft slab of butter and watch it melt and sizzle on your toast for a few seconds before spreading it evenly all over the toast. Oh the joy of all of this is heavenly. When all of this is done, you have an out-of-this-world piece of delicacy in front of you appealing to your eyes and nose at the same time. And when you lift it up to your lips and tongue the magic reaches your mouth and finally your stomach and tastes divine.

As all good tasting things this one has its problems too and that is CALORIES. In a bid to switch to healthier options I once tried something called Butter Lite which promised to taste exactly like the classic butter but was not even close. It was an insult to the memories of taste of butter all of us would be having since our childhood. So after somehow finishing up the low-class substitute I again switched to Amul butter (in moderation ofcourse) and swear by it for being my comfort food and I am sure generations would swear by the same. Like the job of comfort foods, it is bound to lift you up from your misery weaving a magic of taste, smell and sight and entangling you in it till the last crumb and even after that. So go ahead and enjoy this golden magic :-)
